Republican Primary voter turnout nearly double that of Democrats, misleading results?
Voter turnout should be a scary metric for Democrats, who seem lackluster in their enthusiasm in the leadup to November, but based on shady practices, that might not be.
Notice of editing and re-release: I should’ve proofread this more, and thought my ideas out more. I’m much happier with this version of the article. Also, Tim Pool and Ian Crossland thought the primary voting idea was good, so I’ll take that as a victory.
I know the running theory with Democrats is the very real fact that their base is voting in Republican primaries to throw a wrench in the system and attempt to block Trump-backed candidates. Sure, that may be happening, there's no law against it, but I'm unconvinced that their plan is to block Trump-backed candidates. I think their goal is to boost them up.
Hillary Clinton in 2016 set the precedent for this practice by pushing Donald Trump to the Republican nomination, thinking there was no way she could lose to him. We all remember how that turned out.
Still, it is telling that that very same playbook is being employed in Republican primaries now, and results seem to show they're pushing Trump-backed candidates to the fore in hopes that Democrats will have an easy time of beating them.
Given how hard the media still works today, nearly 2 years after Trump left office, to incense the public against the man and anyone aligned with him, they still think this is a valid strategy. History isn't totally on their side, but we'll see.
I do know the solution to the shady practice of obfuscating the Primary results via strategic crossover voting, however -- Primary votes cast for the winner of a given Primary should be counted in their November election day totals as well. No need to cast your vote again in November if your preferred candidate gets the nomination.
And counting a Primary winner’s votes toward their general election vote tally has an added buffer effect to weed out strategic crossover voting tactics entirely, because if your vote ended up being counted toward the Primary winner’s vote total, your vote for November is already locked in and you don’t get to vote again.
So, if you’re a Democrat trying to boost an inadequate GOP candidate to the nomination to try and secure an easy general election win for your Democratic candidate, then congratulations, you played yourself. Your vote is going to the GOP candidate, in this case.
I will never understand how people figure it helps the country to contribute to obstructing good candidates of any party from their chance to represent their constituents. You should want the very best candidates up for the job. But scumbags will always be scumbags, I guess.
Besides, these types of practices make you look like the 2016 DNC, be better than that. Anyone who remembers that election cycle remembers the mafia-like behavior of the DNC. They even allegedly whacked Seth Rich. Hey, I said allegedly.
For those who don’t remember, Bernie Sanders, according to internal DNC e-mails leaked by Wikileaks, possibly leaked by Seth Rich - hence the alleged whackjob - revealed that top Democrats did not want Bernie Sanders as the candidate under any circumstances. The e-mails showed then-DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz actively plotting against the Sanders campaign. The fallout from these revelations saw Schultz capitulating to calls from Democrats - including Sanders - to resign from her DNC Chair Post. She did so after the Democratic National Convention that year.
I think we need to leave such practices behind us and let the best candidates of all parties ( not just the Republicans and Democrats, even though there is substantial evidence that Dems want to leave third-party candidates off ballots, and have in my state ) fight it out for the seat they’re vying for in an honest contest on the merits of their policy positions and leave the mudslinging and subversion tactics out of it.
We’re all on the same side here, folks. Contrary to what the media would have you believe.
One thing is certain - Republican voter turnout is absolutely massive this year if the primaries are any indication, so while you should take that with a grain of salt, it may be an indicator of a Red Tsunami™ come November. Prepare accordingly.
