The mugger mentality of mainstream media outlets today as it relates to Rippaverse Comics
Why the modern entertainment industry wants to force you to like what they want you to like
The disparagement of Rippaverse comics has taught me a lot about how woke moralists view how entertainment should be handled. It reminds me a lot of a mugger putting a gun to your head to take your money from you. Perhaps an extreme example, but think about it - they’re extracting your money from you under duress rather than just making something you want to buy. Either pay up or suffer the consequences. It’s literally this image:
Side note: That picture is definitely a young Ben Shapiro. Not really, but I like to think it is. Only he would’ve worked ‘free market economy’ in there somewhere. And an express VPN ad out of nowhere.
Rippaverse Comics is owned by Eric July, aka YoungRippa59 on YouTube. He is an entrepreneur and content creator boasting a following of nearly 500,000 subscribers on the platform. His company has received nearly 39,000 orders, as of the time of writing this, for their upcoming comic series ISOM, and related merchandise. This has resulted in total revenue of $3.31 million dollars and counting, making them undeniable as a rising force in the comic book industry.
What’s fascinating about the ascent of Rippaverse Comics is that they have already garnered a rather telling amount of backlash for simply succeeding to launch. If you know anything about Eric July, you are aware that he is a Libertarian political commentator affiliated with Blaze TV, which was founded by Glenn Beck. And there it is. All the reason in the world for comic book critics - who traditionally swerve hard left - to lament the success of Rippaverse Comics.
You would think they would at least give Rippa some credit for being a black man in a traditionally white industry making a name for himself and establishing a foothold with the success of his company thus far. But, because of his political leanings and professional associations, that is just too much to ask from the snarky critics such as Rich Johnston of bleedingcool.com. The article about Rippaverse Comics is here.
I find the woke mob tends to do this funny thing where they will establish their own personal definition of what a person has said about something, and attack that definition relentlessly. Even if they completely missed the point about what the person they’re at odds with is trying to say. That definitely comes through with the attempts at catching Rippa in moments of doublethink that don’t really come to fruition that well, because again, Johnston is trying to attack the definition that he himself concocted for what Rippa had to say about his company and the products they’re planning to release.
I can see Johnston’s point about putting the cart before the horse, in some respects. Making declarations about storyline things before the first issue is in the hands of readers is maybe a little bit hasty, but is it wrong to establish an overarching vision for the stories you want your company to create?
I don’t know what Johnston is truly trying to say other than that he hates others who disagree with him. I can’t shake the feeling this scathing critique would be a lot kinder if only Rippa had voted for Biden. The real unspoken fear here is losing the institutional left’s stranglehold over the media spaces they’re used to ruling over.
It’s much the same for Hollywood and their displeasure with the Daily Wire having the gall to put Gina Carano in a movie after she was summarily canceled and fired from her job on The Mandalorian for not marching in lockstep with traditional hyper-leftist Hollywood politics. As well as the Daily Wire having the gall to make movies without an underlying agenda related to some pontificating social justice warrior’s propaganda piece.
Propaganda is the operative term, isn’t it? That really is what it’s about. Being in control of the propaganda machine. So far, I have no reason to believe Rippaverse Comics will engage in spewing propaganda, but I’ll be the first to call it out if it does happen. For now, let’s at least enjoy the fact that there are good things coming down the pipeline that are created organically for the sake of telling a good story. I trust that Rippaverse Comics will do just that.
To wrap up, here is my best piece of advice to the woke mob still trying to maintain their dominion over mainstream media releases - a good story can make you think without telling you what to think. Also I don’t need to know Spiderman’s fetishes, thanks.
