Queen Elizabeth II has passed away; nobodies on social media childishly mock her death
If you ever wanted an example of the classless nature of social media 'unremarkables' then just look at the comments on social media in regard to the death of Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, better known as Queen Elizabeth II, has died on Thursday at age 96 after a long string of health problems leaving her unable to make appearances, including the Platinum Jubilee service celebrating her 70th year as queen. Queen Elizabeth was a beloved figure in life and remains so in death, though naturally the ‘unremarkables’ — to coin a phrase to describe typical internet complainers — have taken the opportunity to mock her, showing once again that social media was ultimately a mistake.
Many pronoun-and-flag-namers are taking the opportunity to dissect British policies enacted and enforced during the Queen’s lifetime to accuse her of being a colonizer, despite the fact that the British Monarchy has been mostly a ceremonial position since 1689 after Great Britain became a constitutional monarchy and reigning monarchs adopted political neutrality.
Was the Queen innocent? Not entirely, but who is? If the only punishment for those who are not blameless in life is death, then let us all die right now. Yes, even you, Twitter puritan. Perhaps, though, you should consider leveling the blame at the true imperialists of Great Britain — Parliament and the Prime Ministers presiding over the atrocities you’re laying at the feet of an old deceased woman.
Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware of the many crimes of the British empire. Isn’t nearly the whole premise of the Ms. Marvel show centered around reminding you 3 times a minute about partition? Here’s a whole list for you that I don’t think I’ll bother getting into here, but you’re welcome to read through it at your leisure. Orders came from on-high to commit such atrocities, and men whose loyalties lay with the crown and their own paychecks ‘just followed orders’ to carry them out. You’d be surprised what horrible things ‘I’m just doing my job’ can manifest, whether it was an ordered atrocity or not. Should we lay the blame at the feet of everyone who ever benefited from such things? If so, reparations to the tune of trillions are due all around the world, and that includes us here in the U.S. The British burned down the White house once, I want reparations for that. $1 million please. Matter of fact, make it 1 million pounds for mine — better exchange rate.
Here’s a dose of cold, hard truth for you: Every one of us in developed countries have benefited off the suffering of others, so anyone believing themselves oppressed and without privilege is lying to themselves, in many ways. Those new Nikes you’re so proud of? They were made by forced sweatshop labor by Uighur Muslim workers in China. Remember that next time Billionaire and NBA Legend LeBron James decides to pontificate to you while wearing his signature shoes with a Nike check on the side of them that the company pays him handsomely to market with his name and likeness. Your brand new iPhone was made in a factory surrounded by nets to attempt to curtail the high suicide rate among their workers due to the crushing conditions they’re forced to work in just to survive. In fact, I challenge everyone to look around their homes and find ethically manufactured items. I bet it’s a hell of a lot harder than you realize. So keep on throwing those stones in your glass houses, let me know how that goes.
It’s the typical cognitive dissonance of people who, as Americans, come in every shape, size, race, creed, sexual orientation, etc. and still want to believe they are victims in some capacity to console themselves while in the same breath rejecting the notion that anyone aside from whites in America have privilege. Nevermind the fact that racist university admissions practices were enacted because there were too many Asians at Harvard and this harsh fact flies in the face of the very notion of white privilege because one has to reconcile why an Indian person whose skin is as dark as any other person of color is wealthy and successful, so they have to be designated ‘white-adjacent’ despite being people of color themselves. The mental gymnastics that social justice warriors have to do just to keep their Scientology-esque detachment from reality intact is impressive, and must be incredibly exhausting.
But we all know how it is; Twitter puritans often argue in spite of facts, and curate their experience on the social media site to make sure they don’t actually have a chance to learn the truth about their half-baked hot take.
Naturally, most of these detractors of the Queen who fear legitimate pushback and rational arguments to their questionable takes are limiting replies to their small echo chambers on Twitter. I am willing to wager Twitter isn’t handing down bans for these people despite the emotional distress they could be causing mourning UK citizens who are sad that the beloved matriarch of their storied nation has passed away.
Moral of the story? Be better. I know that the derangement generated by the desire for likes and attention among those who were raised by LED screens is strong, but try to have a human moment and have a little empathy for those who lost someone they love.
